Strawberry and Chocolate Fayre

On Sunday 4th June2017  SARA held their annual Strawberry and Chocolate Fayre at Foxrush Farm. There was a good attendance with everyone enjoying the strawberries and cream. The event also included a display of flyball by Middlesbrough Dog Club, a parade of dogs for rehoming and those who have been rehomed and had come back to see us. It gives the staff and volunteers a boost to see their former charges so healthy and happy. Our thanks to everyone who supported the event by attending, volunteering and the staff for the great work they do on a daily basis. SARA raised £765.

A fond farewell to Ann Prosser

One of the founding members of SARA and its driving force passed away on morning of 8th of June 2017.

21 years ago Ann with a small group of friends helped to rescue dogs and cats and at that time placed them with friends that acted as foster carers. Within One year Saltburn Animal Rescue became a registered charity  and is well known throughout the area.

Ten years ago the charity opened Foxrush Farm  on Kirkleatham Lane Redcar.

Over the years several hundred dogs and cats have been re homed.

Over the years Ann has worked tirelessly  to achieve her dream and in recognition of all her hard work the charity is to be known as SARA Foxrush Farm. Ann Prosser Foundation

The Charity wishes to thank everyone  for all your kindness and support and we shall continue with  all that that has been achieved

Sainsbury’s Charity of the Year

We have been nominated as Sainsbury’s Charity of the Year again this year (2017).

We need all members (Friends and Family) to vote for us.

SARA is engaged in the rescue and ultimate re-homing of strays and unwanted pet, but from time to time animals arrive which cannot, for a variety of reasons, be re-homed. These animals will remain in our care and will be given our support for the remainder of their lives in a foster home.

This costs S.A.R.A a lot of money each year so to help with the costs we set up a “SPONSOR AN ANIMAL SCHEME” which give you the opportunity to help these animals in return you will receive a regular update from our chosen animal and an invitation to our open days where you can meet your sponsor dog (special arrangements can be made for cats).

We are heavily assisted be volunteers therefore you can be reassured that every penny you donate goes directly to the animals. Not only that but if you are a tax payer we can turn every £1 in £1.28 though the Inland Revenue Gift Aid Scheme for example:

A monthly donation of £5 would return £6.40

A monthly donation of £10 would return £12.80

A monthly donation of £20 would return £25.60

All you have to do is choose your favourite animal from those below, complete the form attached and return it to us as soon as possible. You can donate as much or as little as you wish by either taking the standing order to your bank or sending to us so we can forward it on or you can also make a payment by cheque made payable to S.A.R.A.

If you wish to complete a Sponsorship Form please print it out making sure your page settings allow it to be printed on a single sheet of A4 paper and then post it to Foxrush farm, Kirkleatham lane, Redcar, TS10 5NJ

If you wish to complete a Sponsorship Form

Thank you for your support.
The animals available for sponsorship can be seen Below.

Sensory Garden

Inspired by a dogs’ sensory garden at a national flower show SARA thought it would be a brilliant idea and be ideal for the dogs at our sanctuary.

A derelict piece of land has been transformed into a garden full of exciting zones for the dogs to roam freely, under supervision.

A central pebble path runs through a free flowing water spray and a grasses garden provides soft textures.  There is  a rockery, also a log area and an arbour providing shade for resting or grooming.   Raised beds house a profusion of relaxing aromas with herbs to calm animals.

It is an exciting addition to the Sanctuary facilities and has been funded by friends and supporters of SARA.

Although Sam’s progress has been good aided by Catherine Marshall, physiotherapist and Helen Gosling at Butterwick Hydrotherapy there was still a problem as his leg had rotated and he was walking on the side of his foot. After consultation he was referred to an orthopaedic specialist and an operation was carried out on Wednesday 25th January. He now has to have 6 weeks cage rest (he doesn’t agree and lets everyone know it, his lung power is phenomenal). He has a post operative check up on Monday.

Support from Sainsbury’s

This year both Sainsbury’s Saltburn and Sainsbury’s Marske voted Saltburn Animal Rescue Association as their charity of the year.  They have not only placed buckets at all the checkouts to collect donations but invited SARA to hold events in their stores.  To date these 15 events have raised just short of £1800.

The staff at Sainsbury’s, Saltburn gave SARA a hamper of treats for the volunteers who would be working over Christmas, it was much appreciated.

New Dog Lounge Opening

On Sunday 18th December SARA opened its replacement dog lounge, the last one in a portakabin having become unsafe.   Dogs (and volunteers) get a chance to chill out in quiet surroundings.   This helps with assessment and introducing  dogs to a homelike setting.

Sadie is a lovely 5 year old female who was returned to S.A.R.A after her owners situation changed and she was been left for long  periods of time. She is a great dog who loves to run around and play with her toys. Sadie is wonderful with other dogs, she will play with them all day if you let her. She is looking for a home with people who enjoy long walks and she could possibly live with older children 10+ and even another dog. Sadie will make someone a love new family member. Reserve

Carols at Foxrush

A lovely afternoon was spent at SARA’s  Carols at Foxrush with a large number of dogs bringing their owners for a sing song (and joining in). Refreshments were available including mulled wine.  It rounded off another successful year of events.  Thank you to all our supporters and helpers.

We are getting conflicting information on the deadline for objections.  We now think it is the 9th December so you still have time to object.  A draft objection letter to be done as a Word document  and emailed to David Pedlow before the 9th December deadline can be copied from the letter in he last post.

His email address is: and if you click on this link, it will automatically set up an e mail you can then type on, which you will then be able send to David, without having to type in his e mail address and not getting it right.

The draft document is a style you could use in any objection but please note the following points when  emailing to David Pedlow.

  1. You should `copy` from the draft document letter and then `paste` to create your own individual letter on to a new word document and not simply copy the draft verbatim, as we don’t want 50 plus letters all saying the same thing, word for word like this one as that takes the individual status away, and the planners would recognise this and would discount the value of the letters.
  2. The text in red is the information on yourselves that you need to change.
  3. The text in green is some of the reasons you can use to object to. We suggest you pick our 2 or 3 of them and convert them to black type and try to alter them if you can, just so we don’t get 50 all looking the same and like they were typed on one computer. A simple hint is to alter the order of the objections you decide to use and maybe change the font sizes and type settings.
  4. When you have created your own Word doc letter it can be saved on your `desktop` or elsewhere and then attached to your email. That is the best way to do it.
  5. You then go to your email addressed to David Pedlow by clicking on this link and insert the Word Doc you have saved (covered in 4 above). And then say something like….Mr Pedlow, please find attached my objection letter to the `outline planning application number  R/2016/0663` You can put something similar in the `Subject box` on your email.

  1. If you don’t want to create a Word doc, you can `copy` off the Word doc and paste it straight in to an e mail, created by clicking on this link.

But you would have to provide in the email the Application reference number R/2016/0663 and your name and address.

FAO Mr D Pedlow: Planning Officer

Dear Mr Pedlow

Application reference   R/2016/0663

I strongly object to the above proposed development, for the following reasons.

The impact of this proposed housing development on this long established animal sanctuary.

This proposed development  will damage the natural environment of this mature community woodland  and wildlife habitat.

The proposed development  will necessitate  the removal of existing mature trees and natural landscape,  that protects  the animal sanctuary and it will change and destroy the seclusion and privacy aspects, that have been in place for the last 9 or more years.

Safe and quiet areas are  needed  around an animal sanctuary, to provide private, quiet  and safe exercising  facilities for the animals and also peace and tranquillity for any animals that are suffering or recovering from traumatic or stressful conditions they have endured, before being taken in to the sanctuary.

The propped buffer areas between the proposed development and the animal sanctuary are totally unacceptable and this would probably lead to far too many unacceptable issues,  to be able to continue having a sanctuary in this location in the future.

No proper consultation exercise has been discussed or conducted with SARA and the status of this planning application on R&CBC’s Online register on the 2nd of December clearly states that `Official consultation has expired`, which we understand is not the case and this date has been extended. This is misleading to anyone who intended to make an objection and now is unable to do so.

Access to Foxrush Farm is via a track off Kirkleatham Lane, this main road is already heavily trafficked and a development of this size will no doubt impact significantly on traffic volumes thereby  creating access and egress difficulties for the SARA animal sanctuary.

This is the wrong development in the wrong place and I trust you will take my objections in to account when considering the outline planning application and you will recommend it be refused .

Yours sincerely

We urgently need some help to prepare an ecology report on the area surrounding Foxrush Farm.

The current plans for the proposed housing development do not seem to reflect the diverse nature of the wildlife that inhabitant the area.

We have a tight timeline in which to challenge this report and if anyone has any specific knowledge that could help could they please contact

Jet is a lovely 8 year old lab cross who came into us a year ago after she was found as a stray. This makes her currently our longest resident for some unknown reason .She is a lovely dog who enjoys playing fetch and long walks. She is a very affectionate girl who is looking for a home with experienced dog owners where she can be an only dog with no children.

In the summer of 2016 Support Adoption for Pets (Pets at Home) held its annual summer fundraising drive.  The total raised for the country was £464,013.

A team from Saltburn Animal Rescue Association attended the Middlesbrough store to help with the fundraising.

The Middlesbrough store raised £1164 of which  £582  was passed onto SARA by Dave the deputy manager collected by Fern, Sam and Barney.

Do you have any glass lidded jars that could be used by one of our volunteers to fill up with pet treats as Christmas presents for pets.

If you do could you please take them into Foxrush Farm or our charity shop in Guisborough.  If you have a large quantity we could arrange for collection

On Sunday 16th October 2016 SARA held its annual Twilight Stroll.  They had a quiet stroll up the lane and back ending up at the memory garden to remember all those friends and animals that have passed.

Could you please collect Evening Gazette wish tokens for SARA. There are SARA boxes around the area to put them in and then we will collect them. The more tokens we collect the more money we get to help the animals. Thank You

SARA held its Open Day on the Saturday 10th September. It was well attended and events included a mini fun dog show, doggy games and a flyball display by local teams. Music was provided by Cleveland Ukes. We were supported on the day by staff from Sainsbury’s, Saltburn and the sea cadets. As usual there was a tempting display of food (especially cakes). The day was completed by the grand draw details of which will be on our facebook page shortly. Our thanks go to all who supported us.

Anolox September Visit

Analox return to SARA to help prepare for open day

A group of Analox staff visited SARA on Wednesday 7 September, helping look after the animals as well as general cleaning around the Arundel Centre in preparation for SARA’s open day.

The charity day was attended by a mix of staff from different departments, some of whom hadn’t taken part in a charity day before.  Their help was much appreciated at a very busy time for SARA.
